I Knew It!

It ain’t my birthday yet. At least, not for another 2 days. But I already got a birthday card from Dr. B last weekend.

I laughed when I read what she wrote inside the card “Happy ___th Birthday. (You can put any age you like!)”, then I promptly told her “24th!” We had a good laugh about it and I thought that was the end of it.

Then came lunch break today. I was checking emails one minute, browsing through ads for home theater seating the next, then started blog-hopping, until I found myself answering the “What Age Do You Act?” quiz at Blogthings.com.

I knew! I knew it! I knew it! Told ya I’m 24 years old ;) Or at least act like one hahaha!

You Act Like You Are 24 Years Old

You are a twenty-something at heart. You feel like an adult, and you’re optimistic about life.
You feel excited about what’s to come… love, work, and new experiences. You’re still figuring out your place in the world and how you want your life to shape up.The world is full of possibilities, and you can’t wait to explore many of them.

What Age Do You Act?

Incidentally, I’ve written a post a few months ago on my thoughts about my ‘real’ age. At least I’ve progressed from 13.3 to 24 ;)

Bread Story

This story happened in December 2006, when the twins were 11 months old.

I bought some bread that day… and somehow, in my haste, brought it with me to the master’s bedroom and totally forgot about it for the rest of the evening.

The next morning, when DH and I woke up, this is what we saw:-

twins with bread

The twins must have seen the bread, somehow managed to open the plastic bag (which wasn’t sealed but tied loosely with a plastic tag), and helped themselves to the bread! :D

That’s Twin2 in the foreground, picking out the raisins from the bread, and Twin1 in the background, as though trying to get away from the scene of the ‘crime’ ;)

Take note of Twin1′s pajama pants — they’ve got a hole in the crotch area! I bought them in Carrefour Shanghai during one of my business trips. Apparently, or so I was told, a lot of people in Mainland China don’t use diapers in the daytime. The toddler would walk around wearing pants like these. And when nature calls, the child would just squat, effectively opening up the hole in his pants for him to be able to do his/her business. How or when the parent(s) would clean up the child after that is beyond my knowledge.

I dunno if this thing still happens in China but when DH and I were at the Forbidden City in Beijing some 3 or 4 years ago, there was a child who pooed on the floor of one of the courtyards (what sacrilege to a cultural monument!). The mother quickly scooped up the child in her arms while the father hurriedly tried to clean up the ‘evidence’ with some tissue. What an irony that a hygiene conference was ongoing in the very same city at that time!

Malaysia School Holidays

The year-end school holidays start tomorrow for all schoolchildren throughout Malaysia. You can expect the roads to be smoother (less people sending/fetching their children, while a lucky few go off on holidays), hotels and tourist attractions to be jam-packed, wedding invitations galore almost every weekend, staff taking leave to go on a holiday with their family and/or send their children to their kampung and/or fetch their children from boarding school, and all sorts of activities, workshops, tuition packages and camps for children and teenagers advertised in magazines and newspapers.

For me, school holidays means less stress in the morning (no more early morning struggle with sleepyheads), no more issues about missing school shoes, no more last-minute searches for school supplies that somehow need to be replenished almost every week. But it also means having to find more productive activities for the kids other than the usual TV and internet fare, having to stock up on more food in the fridge and the pantry… and having to deal with an overflowing laundry hamper almost everyday!

I’ve been in Malaysia since 1993 but I still have difficulty remembering when the school holidays fall. In the Philippines, schoolchildren only had Christmas/New Year break and their summer vacation. In Malaysia, on the other hand, there’s the first term break in March, the second term break in early June, the third term break in August, and the year-end break from mid-November to end-December or the first few days of January. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the school term starts in January here for primary and secondary schools.

If I’m not mistaken, universities and colleges (they’re not created equal in Malaysia!) follow a different schedule. Perhaps I’ll learn how it works once MyEldest gets to that level ;) But for now, I continue to faithfully key in the dates of the school holidays into my PDA so that I don’t forget them! It’s also useful for planning trips in advance whenever there are travel fairs or when some airlines have a promotion on fares.

School Holiday 2009 From To
1st Term Break 14-Mar-09 22-Mar-09
2nd Term Break 30-May-09 14-Jun-09
3rd Term Break 22-Aug-09 30-Aug-09
End of Year Break 21-Nov-09 03-Jan-10

*In Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu Term Break commerces a day earlier.

For a more detailed calendar by state (yes, Virginia, holidays vary slightly from one state to another), please refer to the Malaysian Minister of Education’s website.

If you plan to be anywhere in Malaysia during the school holidays, book your hotels in advance to avoid getting disappointed, as most hotels will be fully booked by then. And expect higher rates during those times, as they’re considered peak season.

6 Things That Make Me Happy

I’ve been tagged by Sinta, the lovely bride-to-be who knits and draws, and loves roses and tea, and has a cute little cat called Pascal. I wonder if he’s named after the programming language. Speaking of which, I have vague memories of writing lines of code using that language, way back when I was 16… Something that involved writeln and readln, feeling elated when my mini program worked (I did that?!), feeling exasperated when it wouldn’t work like it should. I was a lousy programmer :P

Oops…where were we again? Ah, yes, the tag.

This tag’s pretty simple — I only have to write about 6 random things that make me happy. Now, if I’m to mention anything involving my 3 passions in life — my kids, travel, and photography — that would be too predictable and way too easy.

Sooo…lemme think…

  1. Chocolate. The all-around panacea for all sorts of ailments, particularly work-related stress. A wise man once said, “If all else fails, there’s always chocolate.” Or was it just Garfield? :D But seriously speaking, scientific studies show that consumption of chocolate triggers the release of endorphins, reducing the chocolate-eater’s sensitivity to pain, and contributing “to the warm inner glow induced in susceptible chocoholics.” I’m a chocoholic. I am, I am.
  2. Serendipity.  This is defined as “good luck in making unexpected and fortunate discoveries.” Sometimes I’m googling something out but find something else instead, which turns out to be very useful. Sometimes, I stumble upon a site through another site which I found through a friend’s blog, which gives me the solution to a problem that’s long been nagging me. Sometimes, it’s when I’m out shopping for an item that I need…then find it on sale…then get an extra 5% for buying the display item. The latter happened to me when I bought a Kenwood Chef — the British equivalent to the American Kitchen Aid — a few months ago. I found one at Harvey Norman’s in Pavilion. It was heavily discounted because Kenwood won’t be manufacturing that particular model anymore, although spare parts are still available. It was  in pristine condition and still covered by Kenwood’s warranty…and I got the extra discount for buying the display item!
  3. Free stuff. Free gifts. Free meals. Buy one, get another one free. I could very well have been the person who came up with the saying “The best things in life are free”!
  4. New toys. As in gadgets. Phones, laptops, and other thingamajigs. I looooove toys. I’m such a tech-geek at heart. If I could have my way, I’d spend hours (perhaps days?) browsing the shops in Plaza Low Yat to ogle the latest laptops, hold the latest DSLR’s, try out unlocked cell phones.
  5. Reconnecting with old friends in the most unexpected of ways…and making new ones along the way. Facebook. Multiply. Stumbling upon blogs of people who turn out to be friends/relatives of friends. Ain’t the internet wonderful? :)
  6. Weekends and public holidays. No explanation needed on this one! :D

Now, I’m tagging LittleMsFirefly, Sheng and WitsAndNuts. It’s your turn, ladies…

What about you? What are the small things in life that make you happy? Happy weekend, everyone!

Homemade Cookies & Cream Ice Cream

ice creamOne thing that I’ve stopped buying in the past few months is ice cream. I’ve invested in a Kenwood ice cream maker for two reasons:-

  1. I wanted to have better control over what goes into my children’s ice cream; and
  2. I thought of making some fat-free, sugar-free ice cream for myself.
