When Hantaran Goes Modern…

Remember my previous post on hantaran?

Well, times are changing and hantaran is changing along with the times.

Now we get nifty gifts like this netbook for her…

And this Blackberry for him.

When I expressed my surprise at such high-tech gifts, Dr B said she’s even seen someone give a PS3 as hantaran!

Makes me kinda wish I’m getting married in this millenium instead ;)

Twitter Pics Would Have To Do For Now

After a harrowing 12-hour flight back home (Capetown-KL via Johannesburg), it feels so good to be home again. No thanks to bad weather, there were several instances of considerably prolonged turbulence during the flight which kept me wide awake in terror.

I may be home now, but I’m sleep-deprived and badly in need of rest. Hence, the pics that I posted via Twitter would have to do for now:-

Capetown viewed from Table Mountain

The city of Capetown viewed from the top of Table Mountain. We stayed a good hour or so up there. The view was just fantastic!

lioness getting ready to attack

Hostile lioness getting ready to ‘attack’. An electric fence separated us but since I was viewing it through a (borrowed) 18-200mm zoom lens, it felt like there was nothing separating us. I never knew a lion’s (or lioness’) roar can strike so much fear in a human heart!

Cape Point

Magnificent view from the lighthouse on top of Cape Point at Cape of Good Hope National Park, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. Ocean waters in all directions, as far as the eye can see.

Pics of Capetown and Cape Point taken with my trusty old Nokia N82. Pic of the lioness taken with my D40 but resized for mobile uploading. Watch out for the ‘proper’ pics in my coming posts.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Before I Leave For Capetown…

I must announce the winners of the recent Dutch souvenirs giveaway.

First of all, I made a list of the names of the people who left comments, then I went to Random.Org’s List Randomizer and got this…

randomized list

Congratulations, Jessi and Fortuitous Faery! Please email me your name and mailing address sometime this week because I’m leaving for Capetown tonight and won’t have the time to mail the goodies until after I get back to KL.

Who knows? I just might find some nice souvenirs on sale in Capetown for the next giveaway… ;)

A Quick Clarification

The next few days are going to be hectic for me.

First off, the kids are having their school holidays (it’s almost over, by the way) and we’re going off somewhere tomorrow that has horses in the programme, thereby ruling out the possibility of taking my laptop along.

Then I’m flying again on Sunday, this time to Capetown. Just when I’ve finally cleared off all the backlog that piled up during my recent trip to Amsterdam, including that small matter that involved outdoor furniture.

Oh, and speaking of my recent trip, I just want to clarify that I didn’t manage to go to Brugge (a.k.a. Bruges), as originally planned. I went to Antwerp instead, where I sought a comic book shop, of all things.

Antwerp map

In the coming days (weeks?), I’ll be writing about quite a number of things:-

- CitizenM Amsterdam City Hotel, a hip and hi-tech funky hotel in Amsterdam
- Ter Driezen Hotel in Turnhout, Belgium, whose origins can be traced back to the 1830′s
- The Indonesian-Dutch language connection, with proof in photographs
- Royal Selangor Visitor Centre, where the kids and I saw the largest tankard in the world, certified by the Guinness Book of Records
- A Special Stop At Mekanik Comic Book Shop in Antwerp
- Whirlwind Walking Tour of Antwerp’s City Centre
- Flying Long-Haul With Singapore Airlines

Just so you know what’s in store. And to whet your appetites a bit, given that I’ll be away for almost a week ;)

Of course, by the time I get back from Capetown next week, I’ll have thousands more of photos to sift through and tonnes of news and information to blog about.

In the meantime, please pray for a safe trip for DH and me!

Acme Made’s ‘The Bowler’: Slim & Chic Bag For DSLR Cameras

There are two main caveats that come with owning a DSLR camera:-

1) You’ll be tempted to buy different types of lenses; and
2) You’ll be buying several camera bags to fit your gear in.

I’ve already got a Crumpler 5 Million Dollar Home for trips to the park or the beach.

Then, there’s my ‘medium’ black leather Jill-E bag that I use for overseas travel because it can fit 2 camera bodies, a flash, 2 lenses, my purse, small toiletry items…even my old 13-inch Sony VAIO laptop. (It fits but I wouldn’t recommend it because the bag is not meant to carry laptops and doesn’t distribute the weight evenly.) Not that I carry a lot of photography equipment. It’s nice for putting in lots of stuff, that’s all, saving me from rummaging through my suitcase for contact lenses or my toothbrush coz they can all fit comfortably into the same bag.

My problem is when I have to go to more formal functions like weddings when I’m just there as a guest but want to bring my camera anyway for my own use. Cameras need padding. And a considerable amount of space. And a considerably large opening.

Hence, my decision to buy Acme Made’s new camera bag called “The Bowler.”
