Lunchbreak In Malaysia

Walk into any shopping mall during lunchbreak on Fridays and you’re bound to see hordes and hordes of womenfolk shopping, window-shopping, eating.

Pavilion KL

This is because on Fridays, everyone gets a two-hour lunchbreak, in order to give the men enough time to go for Friday prayers at the mosques. [NB: Majority of Malaysians are Muslims.] But since women are not obliged to go to the mosque (i.e. they can do their prayers in private), therefore, the women do what women do best — shop!

Lunchbreak in Malaysia is generally from 1 pm to 2 pm (1300 hrs to 1400 hrs) or 12.30 to 1.30. On Fridays, however, it’s usually from 12.30 pm to 2.30 pm (1230 hrs to 1430 hrs).

So if you’re in Malaysia and you have something to settle on Fridays, better keep the long lunch hour in mind, especially if you’re dealing with a government office. There’s just no way of getting around it.

Note: I realise that this photo of Pavilion mall is an old one (notice the Christmas decorations — this was obviously taken last December) but then I thought to myself — why use other people’s photos if I have one of my own? :)

Henna On My Hand

This is what happens when you put off doing things — the files end up buried somewhere in your hard drive, almost 3 months later you unearth a photo that you really like and meant to blog about, so then you end up posting a late entry because you really like that pic.

This was the henna tattoo that I got on my hand when I went for a wedding in Oman last May. This time around, I opted not to have my nails ‘painted’ with the henna because I knew it would have taken months for my nails to grow out the henna stain. And knowing how my skin can get irritated by the chemicals that they add to the henna in Oman, I only had a small design made up to my wrists. The design faded away after about a week.

Oh well…you know what they say — better late than never!

My Favourite Photo Of KL To Date

…is not even one that I took, but an image that I found in Google Images.

Kuala Lumpur

Allow me to point out to you some points of interest in this photo.

Moving clockwise, let’s start with the Petronas Twin Towers on the upper right-hand corner. I suppose they’re famous enough to not require any introductions anymore.

At their base is the Suria KLCC shopping mall. It’s very, very crowded these days, filled not just with shoppers but with families, tourists and people just hanging around. Suffice to say I prefer to shop elsewhere these days.

In the foreground — just below the famous twin skyscrapers and the shopping mall — is the KLCC mosque (Masjid As-Syarikin).

The area with the dense greenery on the left is the sprawling KLCC Park, complete with children’s playground and wading pool. (And no, there are no rv parks anywhere in KL or in Malaysia, for that matter.)

The park is flanked by the KL Convention Centre (the long building with bright lights just behind the greenery).

The tall white tower right smack in the middle of the photo is the KL Tower, which features a viewing platform and a revolving restaurant offering an unparalleled 360º-view of the city and its environs.

The photo is insanely beautiful, don’t you think so? But I have no idea where the original photograph/Photoshop rendition comes from, hence I can’t give the proper credit for it.

CitizenM Amsterdam City Hotel: Quirky, Trendy, One Of A Kind

I’ve been meaning to write about this place for so long, it’s a wonder the pics haven’t gone stale in my harddrive from the loooong wait since our trip to Amsterdam last May. So here we go…

CitizenM Amsterdam City Hotel is not your average hotel. The hotel’s name itself plus the photo on its facade of a bunch of people pulling their luggage give just the slightest hint that the hotel is extraordinary somehow…

CitizenM facade

Step inside and you won’t see the usual imposing lobby or ho-hum check-in counter. No sirree, their check-in counter is not ho-hum at all — it’s revolutionary. All you’ll see is this long counter with computer terminals. Yes, you’re expected to check-in and check-out all by yourself. Of course, some of their staff are waiting politely at the sidelines to give assistance to the technologically-challenged or just plain awe-struck travellers.

CitizenM check-in/out

Just type your surname into the terminal, confirm your identity, review the reservation details, pick which floor you’d like to stay in (a no-brainer — 1st or 2nd?), insert your credit card into the appropriate slot, touch the card to the thingamajig that programs it, and voila! You’ve just checked yourself in.

In lieu of a lobby, you get this cozy lounge:-

And instead of a swanky restaurant, they have this canteen that doubles as a bar and mini souvenir shop:-

Sorry if the pic is a bit blurry. I shot this while walking. As in, I was shooting while holding the camera at waist level. I was trying to be inconspicuous, you know what I’m saying?

As you walk towards the lift, you can’t possibly miss this most awesome little nook filled with huge Macs (yeah, baby!), where you can surf the internet for free:-

CitizenM Macs

(If you prefer to surf the net in the privacy of your room with your laptop, WiFi is free!)

Getting a bit giddy now? I don’t blame you.

The hallway itself is quite bare, furnished with just one eclectic couch, and you start to wonder what kind of hotel you’ve just gotten yourself into.

CitizenM hallway

Note: There’s a huge photo of an artist’s impression of the hotel hanging right in front of the lift that’s bound to raise eyebrows. However, given that this blog is family- and child-friendly, I won’t be posting that photo in here. I guess you just have to see that photo for yourself when you go to that hotel one day. ^-^

So you go into the lift, exhausted from your trip. The lift doors open and you get even more confused. The hallway is white… too white (although the carpet is a glaring red).

CitizenM hallway

The doors are all plain. And what’s even more disconcerting is how close each door is to the other.

Intrigued, you look for your room, then wave your card key in front of the lock. You open the door slowly…and let out a gasp.

CitizenM room

The room is so…so…so tiny. And…and..different! The width of the large king-sized bed is the width of the entire room. The length of the room is about three times the length of the bed.

Three And A Half

I just realised with a start that the twins are three and half years old today. Oh my!

twins with toy dumptruck

In just six more months, they’ll be out of playschool and entering Prep class. [NB: The Malaysian school year starts in January.]

And to think, whenever I cuddle up with them at night, I still refer to them as “Mama’s babies”. Whether I like it or not, they’re no longer babies anymore.

Oh why did the two of you grow up so fast?? :(
