sunlight thru treesMy good friend, Odette, recently asked the readers of her blog what their dream is. Simple question. Or so it seemed. But one that made me stop and really think.

Growing up, I was unsure about many things in my life — what university to go to, what course to pursue, what to do about the thousand and one little details that went on in my life.

But there was one thing that I’ve always been sure of: I’ve always wanted to become a mother. Strange as it may sound, that was my dream: to become a mother.

Sure, I had other goals in life — get a university degree, find a stable job, reach the top of the corporate ladder, travel to faraway places — but they all paled in comparison to the deep-seated longing inside of me to become a mother.

And you know what’s even weirder? The moment I finally became a mother, suddenly the entire universe seemed to revolve around that tiny little creature in my arms. It was no longer about me; there was just him — my son, my firstborn. And all my hopes and dreams were suddenly for him, around him, about him.

And so it went with the birth of each succeeding child.

In the midst of this imperfect, increasingly topsy-turvy, unsafe world, I dream, I hope and I pray for my children to have…

  • Unwavering belief and faith in God above
  • An unending thirst for knowledge
  • The wisdom to discern between right and wrong and the strength to choose and to do what is right
  • The will to make themselves better, help others become better and make this world a better place
  • The virtues of patience, kindness, and forgiveness

And may God grant me the strength and guidance so that I can help them achieve these hopes and dreams. Amen.
