The Great Missed Call Mystery

Posted by Mimi on 20 May 2009

missed callIt’s a universal fact that your mobile phone almost always rings when you’re in the bathroom or busy with something or another.

By the time you’re reunited with your phone, you pick it up and scroll through the ‘Missed Calls’ list to check who it was. You see an unfamiliar number and, for a moment, you hesitate if you should call or not.

What if it’s urgent?

What if it’s your son, using a friend’s phone with a prepaid number and his friend has ran out of credit?

What if it’s your mom, stuck with a flat tyre and an empty battery, borrowing a stranger’s phone?

So you decide to satisfy your curiousity and call back.

The phone rings once, twice, thrice…then you find yourself taken aback by an unfamiliar voice at the other end that demands to know, “Who is this?”

You stutter and say, “I’m just returning your call. You called me just a while ago,” silently berating yourself for even bothering to call the dimwit back.

Sometimes, it gets worse: he/she even gets the nerve to ask who you are and where you are located. “Siapa tu? Kat mana ni?”

The worst case I ever got? It turned out to be some telemarketer, who then proceeded smoothly to make his pitch.

Does this happen to you, too?

    Yes, always! And how irritating!

  2. Garando

Yes, happens to me too! But what really annoys me are the “wrong numbers” I get on my home phone. In Manila kase, when I reply with “Sorry, you called the wrong number.” most people just drop the phone immediately. They don’t bother to apologize or just even say “Ok, thanks.” Wish they had more manners.

Thanks for visiting my blog btw! :)

Lola: But you can’t help but call back the mystery caller, right? ;)

Garando: I get that, too. But some people at least have the courtesy to apologize. I’ve been visiting your blog for quite a while now; just didn’t bother leaving any comment earlier on.

    Caryn: Walang hiya, no?

    Francesca: ROFLMAO re Lolo ;)

  6. odette

hihi! that’s funny, happened to me many times in the philippines!
kj almost never gets angry, except for telemarketers and salesmen at our door!

  7. kg

ang galing naman ng technique nung telemarketer!

ako, when an unregistered number appears on my missed call list, i usually text first, “Who is this?” and wait for an answer. if i don’t get one, it’s probably not that important.

btw, mimi, sent you an email. :)

odette: “almost never gets angry”. lucky you :)

kg: i guess i’m more paranoid than usual and don’t want to risk it, esp when it could possibly involve my kids hehe. uh..email. ok :)

  9. mordsith

haha. that also happens to me. it’s kinda annoying when you run from the bath to take the call as it may be important, only to find out it’s very unimportant.

Am very careful dealing with missed calls now from unfamiliar numbers so i don’t normally return the calls. They will sure will call back or sms if its important are they? Just had a bad experience with this with the katolong sa bahay na taga Indon i let her use my cellphone to call home sometimes then later starting to steal my phone to call somebody when am sleeping (i sleep dead) yon pala may mga friends dito at bf ay dito. After she gone back to Indon i started to get missed calls, messages to harass me and dirty pictures. That was a bit scary i changed my number after that. Pag may tumawag sa akin ngayon na hindi ko alam ang number i let the other end say hello first if it is a guy or a lady that i dunno press cancel ang dating niyan.

  11. Rosse

sorry and anonymous ay ako ..lol

  12. bem

kainis naman yun. ako naman ‘pag unregistered number ang nag-miss call hindi ko tinatawagan. kasi, kung talagang importante, mag-te-text yun. :D

  13. a-moms-diary

I never return call to any missed call with unfamiliar number, but it never crossed my mind to think about those scenario of your loved one needing help. Hmm…food for thought.

  14. dodong flores

I echo with Garando’s experience. It was always like when the caller realized they dialed a wrong number (which is my number) instead of the intended one, they would just drop the call without apologizing or at least leaving some short explanation.
I usually would text first before returning the call to the mystery caller…
